White Sturgeon Recover Initiative

The Nechako White Strugeon Recovery Initiative (NWSRI) was formed in 2000 in response to the results of an intensive five year study that showed that Nechako white sturgeon were in a critical state of decline. The NWSRI is responsible for identifying the reasons why white strugeon are no longer sucessfully recruiting in the Nechako watershed, and for the design and implementation of habitat protection restoration and management options.

Education and outreach are essential components that assist in the recovery of the endangered Nechako white sturgeon. With support from the HSP, this project will aim to reduce white sturgeon by capture and mortality by both First Nations and non-First Nations communities, as well as increase community level awareness about the decline of this endangered species. Part of the project will focus on outreach and education of First Nations communities. The other part of the project will focus on providing educational and extension materials for other key stakeholders to increase community level awareness of activities of the Recovery Initiative.

One of the highlights of this work is the now annual SOS - Save Our Sturgeon release event. This community based event allows over 1,000 school children to each release a juvenile sturgeon back into the Nechako River. In addition to releasing a fish, children are educated about sturgeon biology, threats and conservation measures.
