Certainly we can feel the effects of winter the last couple of weeks. The Christmas Light parade was as chilly as one could imagine. Along with the cold weather we have the challenge of snow removal from our streets.
Since becoming Mayor just over a year ago, I have been incredibly impressed with our District public works staff. The winter has a number of challenges with snow removal, the District has decided that we will try to get as much of the community moving as quickly as possible, and once that happens time will be taken to clean up the bits and pieces of snow piles that were not done in the initial clean up. It is very impressive to see how the works crew take care of the snow, I would like to take this opportunity to thank them.
We are in the planning stages for some major projects next year. Earlier this year we were visited by both our MLA, John Rustad and MP Dick Harris with some very large cheques for an upgrade to 4th Street. The engineering work has been mostly completed and we expect to go to tender early in the New Year.
This project is very important as we have seen even with a slow international economy, the Vanderhoof economy has continue to perk along quite well. Recently at council we received our building stats for this past year. We have seen almost 70 building permits taken out, with a value of approximately 5 million dollars. Council is very excited with some of the opportunities we see on the economical horizon for the coming year, in particular the new Integris Credit Union building and the upgrade to St. John Hospital.
We are currently working on an Economical Development plan for the District with the findings available to Council and the public early in the New Year. We also have had some consulting work done on a Airport Development Plan, this is being done at an opportune time with the expansion at the Prince George Airport as well as all the upgrades we have gone through this past summer here in Vanderhoof, including lighting, weather station, tracking system and much more.
This is an exciting time for Vanderhoof, should you have any question or comments, contact me at mayor@district.vanderhoof.ca. thanks Gerry Thiessen
